CLING

Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 14, 2026

Everyday Theology (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the CLING mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address, an optional display name, and a securely hashed password. We never store your password in plain text. You may also upload an optional profile picture, which is stored on our server.

Local Data: Most of your data — journal entries (sermon, quiet time, freeform, kids), Bible highlights, memory verses, diagnostic entries, tactical entries, streak data, bookmarks, and reading progress — is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage.

Cross-Device Sync: If you are logged in, your local data is synced to our server so you can access it across multiple devices. This includes journal entries, scripture memory progress, Bible highlights, reading plan progress, streak data, tactical entries, bookmarks, and daily reminder settings.

Server-Stored Data: Certain social and community features require server-side storage, including:

  • Prayer requests shared on the Community Prayer Wall
  • Chat messages with friends and accountability partners
  • Discipleship relationships (mentor/mentee) and tasks
  • Friend connections, shared verses, and activity feed entries
  • Family devotion group memberships and reflections
  • Youth group memberships, shared reading plans, and reflections
  • Spouse/marriage connections and shared reading progress
  • Community posts and comments
  • Content reports submitted for moderation
  • 2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the App’s features. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

    Your data is used to:

  • Authenticate your account and maintain your session
  • Sync your data across devices when logged in
  • Enable social features (friends, chat, discipleship, spouse accountability)
  • Display your prayer requests on the Community Prayer Wall
  • Sync family devotion and youth group progress among members
  • Send push notifications for daily reminders and community activity (with your permission)
  • Moderate content for community safety (including spam prevention and content filtering)
  • 3. Device Permissions

The App may request the following device permissions:

  • Photo Library: To set your profile picture and attach images to journal entries
  • Media Library: To save exported data backups to your device
  • Notifications: To send daily reading reminders and community activity alerts
  • You can manage these permissions at any time through your device settings.

    4. Data Storage and Security

Local data is stored on your device and is only accessible through the App. Server-side data is stored in a secured PostgreSQL database. We use bcrypt password hashing and secure session management to protect your account. Profile pictures are stored as encoded data on our server.

    5. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services to provide its features:

  • ESV Bible API (api.esv.org): To retrieve ESV Bible text for the Bible reader
  • Bible-API.com: To retrieve KJV and WEB Bible translations
  • Expo Services: For push notification delivery and over-the-air app updates
  • These services receive only the minimum data needed to function (e.g., the Bible passage you request). We do not use third-party analytics, advertising networks, or tracking services.

    6. Third-Party Content

Some guided plans within the App include content written by third-party authors, credited within each plan. This content is provided for your spiritual growth and is not an endorsement of any external organization.

    7. Data Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from the Settings screen. Account deletion permanently removes all server-side data — including synced data, prayers, messages, relationships, group memberships, profile picture, and community posts — and all locally stored data from your device. This action cannot be undone.

You can also export your data before deletion using the backup feature in Settings.

    8. Children’s Privacy

CLING is designed to be used by families, including children with parental supervision. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent. The family devotion and youth group features are intended to be used with parental involvement.

    9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy within the App. Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
